Larry Nevel Bests Baraks in Chicago Viking Eventby InsidePOOL StaffLarry Nevel came out on top at the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour's event this weekend in Palatine, IL. Held at Quentin Corner, Nevel bested a tough field of 70 players to end up defeating Jamie Baraks 7-4 in the finals.Nevel cruised through the winners' bracket undefeated the entire weekend, beating Willie Munson 7-3; Mac Hernandez 7-0; Jessie Bowman, who is earning his reputation as one of the best bar table players in the country, 7-4; Chris Conrad 7-1; and Mark Jarvis 7-6 to reach the hot seat match. His opponent, Tom Spencer, was up 5-0 in the race to 7 before Nevel won a game. After that, though, there was no stopping the Wisconsin native, as he ran three racks in a row to bring the score to 5-3 Spencer. A couple of excellent defensive moves later, Nevel found himself locked in a hill-hill match with Spencer. The two engaged in a safety battle, with Nevel coming out the winner 7-6.
Tournament director and room owner of Quentin Corner, Mark Haddad reported, "Larry's playing as good as anyone out there right now." This could easily be true, for after his nail-biting hill-hill win over Spencer, Nevel went on to a 7-4 win over Jamie Baraks. Afterwards, Nevel said, "It went pretty good. No complaints." He credited the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour with excellent events, and admitted that his most difficult match was against Spencer, whom he said played real good in the beginning.1st - Larry Nevel $1,8002nd - Jamie Baraks $1,1253rd - Tom Spencer $6904th - Henry Brodt $4755th/6th - Tim Horne, Mark Jarvis $2507th/8th - Ed Flatt, Mike Moran $809th/12th - Gil Hernandez, Dave Ciancanelli, Chris Conrad, Noy Vichiesoen $60
