Lavoie Lands Another Title
KBP Lucasi Amateur 9-Ball Tour / Palm Harbor, FL
by Rick Davis
Strokers Billiards in Palm Harbor, FL, was host to the March 17 KBP 9-Ball Tour stop, which drew in a powerful 32-player field. Dominating the field was Dan Lavoie, who bagged his five matches in stunning fashion before taking the finals to cap off a great day of play.
Starting off the action were the tour’s heavyweights, many of whom frequent the Florida Pro Tour, such as Jason Richko and Brian Davalos who, along with Lavoie, cleaned up a few rounds. Lavoie only had one match in which an opponent took more than two racks, which was against Davalos who managed to take four before Lavoie defeated him 7-4. Later on the winners’ side, tour favorite Nomar Paula spanked Richko 7-2, his third match win with that score. At that point it was obvious Paula and Lavoie would meet in the hot seat match, as each player destroyed all of their opponents until that point. The hot seat match was the closest either had seen to that point, although Lavoie was too strong and claimed the match 7-5.
On the one-loss side things were heating up as well. Shocking the crowd, Davalos was knocked out by Ed Lorents after a double-hill thriller, then in the next round Richko was sent home by Lorents too. The big story was Wesley Whitfield who, after a first-round loss, took seven more matches to reach the quarterfinals. Also in the quarterfinals was Jeff Miller who was eager for revenge after taking a crushing defeat from Lavoie. Miller slipped past Whitfield 5-4, although the incoming Paula knocked him out 5-3 in the semifinals.
This brought Paula back to face Lavoie in the finals for a single race to 9. Again, it was the closest match either player had seen to that point, and once again Paula fell two racks short as Lavoie cleaned up the set 9-7 to claim the event.
Results:
1st Dan Lavoie
2nd Nomar Paula
3rd Jeff Miller
4th Wesley Whitfield
5th Eric David
Ed Lorents
