Loar Rules Over Virginiaby Rick DavisChris Loar fought back from the one-loss side to win the Virginia State Championships, held at The Playing Field in Richmond, VA. The 64-player field clashed July 22-23 in the double-elimination 9-ball event, which served as a qualifier for the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships.Eric Moore quickly surged to the hot seat match, where he faced John Newton. One of the most consistent players in the event, Moore did not lose more than four racks in any match, and the hot seat match was his crown jewel as he shut out Newton 9-0.
The competitors grinded away on the one-loss side until only a few remained. Loar faced Chris Futrell in the quarterfinals, which showcased the best comeback of the day. Futrell was ahead 6-0 then 7-2, but Loar mounted a comeback to take the lead 8-7. Futrell tied things up but could not overcome Loar once he was in stroke, and Loar took the match 9-8. Loar then faced John Newton in the semifinals and worked his way to a 9-6 win in the final grinder of the evening. The waiting Moore took on Loar, but Loar’s comeback from the one-loss side had him in good stroke, while Moore was getting cold. In the end, Loar defeated Moore 11-7 for the title in the third annual Virginia State Championships, earning free entry into the U.S. Open.Results:1st Chris Loar2nd Eric Moore3rd John Newton4th Chris Futrell5th David AlleyBrandon Shuff7th Walter KochIgmabio MedinaVisit Inside POOL Magazine for the latest news from the sport of billiards and pool.
