Matlock Meets the Black Widow at Derby City By InsidePOOL StaffBar box champ David Matlock met Jeanette Lee in a feature match-up in the 9-ball banks division at the Derby City Classic in Round 2. The Sixth Annual Derby City Classic kicked off on Friday, January 16, and will conclude on Saturday, January 24. The 9-ball banks is the first of three divisions at this incredible event."The Black Widow" came out firing on all cylinders in the first game. Matches consist of a race to three games, with each game a race to 5 points. She broke and ran 3 in a row, with Matlock off to a poor start at -1. Lee reached the hill with her opponent at only 1 but couldn't quite find that last ball to sink. Before too long, Matlock had joined her on the hill but lost the battle for the last ball, as Lee got in a long-rail bank and won the first match 5-4.
Matlock got 2 points right off the bat in the second match, but Lee was quick to tie. A couple of key misses by Lee gave Matlock the hill, and she was only able to get one more point before Matlock got in a nice cross-side bank and won the second match 5-3 to tie up the sets at 1 each. Now warmed up, Matlock closed the third set out in no time, scoring 1 and then another 2 points with Lee trailing at 2. He reached the hill and then made a sweet cut long-rial bank that put the third match under his belt 5-2.On the hill now, Matlock got 3 points in rapid succession, and after Lee's first inning at the table, which scored her a point, he sank a long bank to reach the hill. After trading several innings, Matlock missed what looked to be a shoe-in as the audience groaned. Lee got another point to bring the score to 4-2, but after she missed a shot and broke out the last three balls, Matlock found an easy out to win the game 5-2 and the match 3-1.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
