Matlock is in All-Around LeadBy Justyn Barnes, InsidePOOL StaffThe field is down to the last 23 players after seven rounds of the one-pocket competition at the Derby City Classic in Louisville, Kentucky. The stand-out matches in Round 7 saw the legendary Efren “Bata” Reyes eliminate fellow countryman Jose Parica to remain undefeated, and Jeremy Jones’ win over Truman Hogue also kept him on the all-winning team. Kansas City southpaw David Matlock remained the runaway leader in the race to earn the $25,000 bonus for taking the all-around title as he defeated John Brumback in a repeat of the banks final.World 9-ball champion Alex Pagulayan is hanging in there among the one-loss buy-backs after brushing aside Marcus “Napoleon” Chamat 3-0 to eliminate the Swede from the one-pocket division. Cliff Joyner also defeated Jose Parica 3-2 in a rematch of their 2002 Derby one-pocket final to maintain a foothold in the tournament after suffering a loss to Joe Brown in the fifth round.
One-pocket specialist Scott “The Freezer” Frost also bounced back from defeat yesterday to defeated Pagulayan 3-2 in the sixth round and then faded legend Ronnie Allen 3-0 in an good-natured seventh-round game where both players did as much talking as playing. The remaining players began their eighth round matches at 10 p.m., with Alex Pagulayan catching a bye. There are 336 entrants who also began their bid for the 9-ball title on the sixth day of the Derby City Classic. Mosconi Cup heroes “Rocket” Rodney Morris and Charlie “The Dragon” Williams plus Danny “Kid Delicious” Basavich have flown in especially to play with high hopes of glory.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest on the Derby City Classic.
