McCready Repeats on the Falcon Cue Tour The Falcon Cue 9-Ball Tour was right back in action March 8-9 for Stop #4 at the friendly First Break Cafe in Sterling,VA. Seventy players ignored the first nice weekend of the year and came indoors to shoot at the $4,400 open-division purse made possible by Falcon Cues and First Break Cafe. Saturday was a full day, as the tournament directors worked to fit 108 matches onto the available tables to get the field down to 24 “in the money.” Last event’s winner, Keith McCready, continued to stay on the winners' side. Room owner Stefano Araviakis thrilled his loyal customers by also reaching Sunday undefeated. Not so lucky was 2003 points leader Amar Kang, who bypassed a push-out decision to jump two balls and play a 1-9 combination with a kiss offered by Mike Davis. Davis calmly stepped up and executed the shot, sending Kang over to the one-loss side mid-afternoon.
Sunday seemed to sort everything out, as several new challengers fell to the established players. Kang had collected himself from the early loss and was taking down every player he met, including a revenge win over Davis. Kang continued on to win over familiar names Kevin West and Pooky Rasmeloungo, placing them in fourth and third, respectively, which were worth $325 and $475. This set up the pre-tournament favorite final between the calm and collected Kang and the vocal and entertaining McCready. The crowd was not disappointed, as both players put on a stellar performance with some spectacular shots. Kang took the first set 9-5 and seemed poised to roll on through. McCready regrouped however, and put on a show of his own, winning the second set 9-6 to take the $1,100 first-place prize. Kang settled for $730. The women’s division got underway Sunday morning with another even 16-player field. The field was wide open, as both Nicole Mancini and Sueyen Rhee, who had won the previous three Falcon events, were at the WPBA event in Mississippi. Malea Haacke, who had played strongly last week, took the hot seat with a win over Amanda Smith. Jinhee Park had lost earlier to Smith but proceeded to win five matches, including wins over fourth-place finisher Amy Rodgers before gaining her revenge over Smith, who settled for third. Haacke put an end to Park’s run and won the first set of the final to win the event. First place was worth $325, while second took home $215. The Falcon Cue 9-Ball Tour Event 5 will be at Fast Eddie’s in Fairfax, VA, on April 5-6.
