McCreesh and Haacke Undefeated on the Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour The Planet Pool 9 Ball Tour returned to Bill & Billies Cues Port in Arnold, MD, on March 13-14, 2004, for Stop #3. Room proprietor Kurt Ziem and the loyal tour sponsors made this a $2,500-added event, and 111 open division entrants and 23 ladies on Sunday made for a full weekend of 9-ball.The Saturday open division started out with a couple of upsets as the steadily improving Joey Ryan knocked down Pooky Rasmeloungon 7-6 and Steve Fleming defeated last event’s runner-up Jim Henson. Ryan McCreesh sent points list leader Mike Davis to the one-loss bracket with a 7-4 setback in the third round. By Saturday night, the field was slimmed down to 24 players, including 2003 women’s division player of the year Sueyen Rhee.
The Sunday semifinals of the winners’ side featured McCreesh defeating Keith McCready 9-6 and Brett Stottlemyer winning over Matt Krah. Last November’s event at Bill & Billies also featured these same two contestants in the hot seat match. The outcome was the same this time as McCreesh advanced with a 9-5 win. In the elimination bracket, Mike Davis was mounting a run with wins over Ryan, Nick Prinsloo, Jack Maginnis, Scott Haas, and McCready. A 7-6 safety battle over Krah, who settled for fourth place, set the stage for more of last November’s event. In a repeat performance, Stottlemyer defeated Davis 7-4 and then lost to the unstoppable McCreesh 9-6. McCreesh took home $1,500 for first place, with Stottlemyer earning $850 for his second-place finish.Twenty-three ladies signed up for the Sunday-only event. Malea Haacke, bolstered by her Saturday practice in the open division, came out firing and won her first two matches 7-0 and 7-1, respectively. After fighting off points list leader Gwen Dickert 7-4, Haacke convincingly defeated Kathy Friend 7-4 to take the hot seat. Amanda Smith took a 7-4 loss to Friend in stride and advanced in the elimination bracket with wins over Kathleen Lawless and Dickert. She gained her revenge over Friend with a 5-4 victory to take a shot at Haacke. The final was all Haacke as she confidently cruised to a 7-2 win for the tournament victory. First place paid $425, with $280 for second.Malea Haacke takes over the top of the women’s division points list with Mike Davis extending his lead in the open division.
