Mello Wins AWBT Event at Pappy'sby InsidePOOL StaffOut of a field of 27 fine female pool players, Susan Mello came through to win the Arizona Women's Billiard Tour's $1,000-added event held at Pappy's in Phoenix, Arizona, this weekend.Pappy's is a room with a perfect set-up, as the 10 bar tables that the ladies played on all weekend were placed away from the bar and restaurant area. It had a wonderful viewing area for spectators to cheer on their favorite female.In the hot seat match, Kristin Haney was matched up with Madelyn Roberts, a former professional player. Haney was down 4-1 in the race to 5 but never wavered as she made her comeback and won the match 5-4. Roberts then went on to play Mello in the semifinals. Mello came back from a 3-1 deficit and won their match 5-4, going on to challenge Haney in the finals.
The AZWBT uses a true double-elimination format with alternating breaks. Mello won the first set by the convincing score of 5-1. The second set went back and forth for a time, but after winning her fourth game to reach the hill, Mello broke and ran the next rack to win the second and deciding set 5-2.The AZWBT's next event will be on June 28-29, 2003, at Pockets in Tucson, Arizona.1st - Susan Mello $4052nd - Kristin Haney $2753rd - Madelyn Roberts $202
