Mixed Emotions Dominate After Third RoundFeelings after the third round are running the gamut between elation and depression. “I played bad, period,” Shannon Daulton said after an 8-4 loss to Tom Storm. “All around I just played bad. Not won a match. I played pretty good the first two matches—it seemed like that the table would not let me win and the other guys played good too. That last match I just played bad—got off a little mentally and that was it.”IPT discussion forumDay 3 image galleryMatch scheduleOn the flip side, Shawn Putnam won 8-4 over Rodolfo Luat and exclaimed, “The day is going great—I’ve got two Filipinos in my bracket and I chopped up both of them. I’m three and oh. Now I’m playing good, seeing my patterns better. I’ve got my mixture right of my energy pills, Mountain Dew, energy drinks, and bananas. Best thing is you play all day long and that’s when you see peoples games shine, when they play all day … that’s what you want when you’re shooting good.”
He added, “It’s tough to make a ball on the break. You have to hit them as hard as you can with control. You have to get the cue ball straight back and stopping or getting past the side, because it doesn’t matter what happens once it’s past the side. A lot of times the cue ball gets to the side, loops and scratches.”There were some lopsided scores in the third round: Keith Bennett over Chris Orme 8-1, David Matlock defeated Jon Kucharo 8-2, Imran Majid didn’t allow Sal Butera one rack, Jonathan Pinegar bested Anthony Ginn 8-1, and Gabe Owen dealt an 8-1 loss to David Broxson.Mike “The Mouth” Sigel suffered his second loss of the day when Marko Lohtander of Finland defeated him 8-6. Sigel’s first loss came at the hands of Quinten Hann from Australia. Johnny Archer had his first loss of the tournament when Mika “Iceman” Immonen won their match 8-6. Serbia’s Sandor Tot walked over Mark Tademy with an 8-1 score for his third win of the day. “I’m feeling great right now—full of power. I think I’m already in the third round. The last two matches were not so important. Of course, every match is important, but I think that the last two—if I win only the one, I’ll be good for the next round … Don’t be surprised if I win this tournament.”Scott “The Freezer” Frost won his first match of the day, going 8-6 against Sam Monday, and Steve Moore defeated Bernard Jahnke 8-3 for his first win as well. Raj Hundal won his second match today by the same score over Andreas Koukiadakis. “Rocket” Rodney Morris defeated Yannick Beaufils 8-6, saying, “Well, I'm two and one so far. I didn’t play very well that last match, even though I won. Biggest problem is I’m scratching on the break a lot. I’ve got some of the tougher players in my group—everyone plays pretty good but I feel good. I’m just going to try to hit the racks square and not scratch. I’m confident I’ll get through the group.”Snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan just lost his third-round match against Robert McKenna—from holding a 6-2 lead, O’Sullivan had to watch as his opponent came back to reach the hill. Once there, McKenna played a nice break-out shot on one of his stripes, but when O’Sullivan tried to play safe, he fouled, and McKenna dished up for the 8-6 win.Sarah Ellerby was the only woman to win a match in the third round, defeating Danny “Kid Delicious” Basavich by a decisive 8-2 margin. Earl Strickland won the grudge match between Gerda Hofstatter and himself 8-2, Allison Fisher lost to Jeff Beckley 8-3, and Wayne Catledge defeated Loree Jon Jones 8-4.Round 2 Groups Match schedule for July 25, 2006Group 41Kirkwood, JasonHeuwagen, LeeEllerby, SarahHarper, CoreyBasavich, DanielGarrahan, TheodoreGroup 42Bennett, KeithPagulayan, AlexMonday, SamOrme, ChrisFrost, ScottVarner, NickGroup 43Ginn, AnthonyStrickland, EarlPaez, IsmaelPinegar, JonathanWalden, JamesHofstatter, GerdaGroup 44Hundal, RajDiks, RicoOwen, GabeKoukiadakis, AndreasBroxson, DavidBroumpton, RichardGroup 45Reyes, EfrenBustamante, FranciscoHarrison, PhilipAdkins, DeeMacias, JonathanKlasovic, AndrejaGroup 46Sigel, MikeManalo, MarlonJones, Loree JonLohtander, MarkoCatledge, WayneHann, QuintenGroup 47Boyes, KarlFisher, AllisonAbood, GaryPutnik, IvicaBarger, FloydBeckley, JeffGroup 48Orcollo, DennisAlcano, RonatoSan Souci, GeorgeDeuel, CoreyWims, JohnValle, GandyGroup 49Archer, JohnnyDaulton, ShannonMcKenna, RobertImmonen, MikaO'Sullivan, RonnieStorm, TomGroup 50Hohmann, ThorstenOrtmann, OliverTot, SandorPeach, DarylTademy, MarkCalderon, JerryGroup 51Hatch, DennisSchmidt, JohnBreedlove, GeorgeFu, JianboMcCready, KeithJones, SammyGroup 52Souquet, RalfButera, SalJoyner, CliffStalev, EvgenyWetch, JimmyMajid, ImranGroup 53Zimmerman, MichaelLining, AntonioLuat, RodolfoVickery, HowardPutnam, ShawnGroce, BrianGroup 54Foldes, VilmosEckert, RalphWatson, GerryYounger, JoelMekari, TomokiPotier, PaulGroup 55Marquez, MarcoMartinez, RafaelMorris, RodneyDavenport, KimBeaufils, YannickHopkins, AllenGroup 56Raybone, NeilMoore, SteveNevel, LarryOkumura, TakeshiJuva, MarkusJahnke, BernardGroup 57Petroni, FabioAppleton, DarrenMontal, EdwinJones, JeremyHunter, BobbySambajon, SantosGroup 58Chamat, MarcusMorris, CarlFrank, TroyWilliams, CharlieBartram, ChristopherTownsend, ScottyGroup 59Chohan, TonyHill, MichaelSchmidt, MichaelGay, LeilLely, AlexFeijen, NielsGroup 60Salvas, LucVan den Berg, NickKucharo, JonHogue, GregMatlock, DavidMladenovic, GoranVisit Inside POOL Magazine for the latest news from the sport of pool and billiards and the IPT North American Open 8-Ball Championship.
