One-Pocket Winding Down While 9-Ball Begins By InsidePOOL StaffThe one-pocket division at the Sixth Annual Derby City Classic, which is being held at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville, KY, is winding down. The one-pocket division is scheduled to end on Thursday, January 22, 2004, and is now down to 44 of the original 303 entrants.Scott "The Freezer" Frost played cue maker Bobby Hunter in Round 5 earlier on Wednesday afternoon. Frost, a regular columnist for InsidePOOL Magazine and thought to be one of the top ten one-pocket players in the world, broke the first game, traded safes with Hunter, and then ran 5 in a row for a 5-1 lead. After Hunter missed and sold out on his next shot, Frost ran 3 and out to win the first game 8-1.
In the brief second game, Frost executed a great backsmash and caromed the 3 into his pocket. From there, he was able to run another 7 and out to win 8-0, putting him on the hill at 2-0. The last game lasted a bit longer, but Frost's trademark aggressive style makes him one of the fastest one-pocket players. Hunter took a 3-0 lead at first, but he left Frost an opening, and the Arizona player ran 7 and then made Hunter's ball and scratched to put the score at 6-3 Frost. Hunter made 1 and then shot Frost's ball off the table, followed by the cueball to lose a point. An error by Frost gave Hunter another 3 points, but after Hunter scratched again, Frost ran the necessary 2 and out to win the third game 8-5 and the match 3-0.The 9-ball division at Derby kicked off today, with 313 entrants. Max Eberle; Mika Immonen, recent winner of the UPA tour's finale a couple of weeks ago; Johnny Archer, InsidePOOL Magazine's 2003 Player of the Year; Troy Frank; Alex Pagulayan; John Schmidt; Reno Open winner Mike Davis; Jose Parica; defending All-Around Champion Larry Nevel; and Efren Reyes are just a few of the players who hope to win this elite title.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
