Orbach and Jones Victorious at Eighth Annual Sorvino Asthma EventBy InsidePOOL StaffThe two-day pro-am held at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas culminated with the team of Jerry Orbach and Loree Jon Jones being crowned the winners. Held to benefit children who suffer from asthma, the event was run by Charles Ursitti and hosted by the multi-talented actor/singer/sculptor Paul Sorvino. The Venetian was the main sponsor of the event, which raised approximately $100,000 for the charity, and Olhausen Tables, Competition Sports Corp., Iwan Simonis, and Spirit Airlines additional sponsors.Today’s matches began in the one-loss bracket with the team of Fran Crimi and emergency stand-in Alfredo Versace versus Ewa Laurance and host Paul Sorvino on Table 1, and Loree Jon Jones and teammate Jerry Orbach against Michael Sorvino, standing in for Aaron Carter, and his partner, Lou Butera on Table 2. The Orbach/Jones team had little problems dispatching Sorvino and Butera 5-1; however, the other match seesawed all the way to hill-hill. From a straight-in 6 ball, Laurance went rail-first and got great position for her partner, Sorvino, to sink the final 7 ball.
In the match to determine fourth place, Jones/Orbach team met the newly victorious Laurance/Sorvino partners. The two teams traded games all the way to the final game, where Laurance scratched in the side trying for three-rail position for her partner on the 6 ball, enabling Jones/Orbach to cash in for the 5-4 win.Lots of screaming and cheering accompanied the semifinal match between partners Mike Sigel and Kevin Trudeau against Jones and Orbach. Down from a 4-1 deficit, Sigel/Trudeau tied the match on the hill. Though Sigel scratched on the break, he got another chance at that rack when he speared in the 3 ball, leaving a difficult shot on the 5 for Trudeau. Without hesitation, Trudeau long-rail banked the 5 into the corner pocket. Sigel left his partner a fairly easy shot on the 7, but Trudeau undercut it, and Orbach pocketed it to move on to the final match. The finals were nip and tuck, with Massey and Tolkan taking the first game. Jones and Orbach won the next three in a row with some excellent partnership on the table. With a great slice on the 3 ball, the Massey/Tolkan team got another game under their belt to make it 3-2, but then Jones/Orbach reached the hill after a foul by Tolkan on the 4 ball. Massey earned his team another game after a scratch by Orbach, but in the final game, Tolkan shot the 7 ball a bit too hard in the side and it was rejected, leaving a simple shot in the corner for Orback to win 5-3.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
