Orcollo Runs Seven Racks - Morris and Deuel Win at IPT Billiards EventDennis Orcollo of the Philippines, who recently won his IPT card at a qualification event in Bellflower, CA, broke and ran out seven racks out of eight to hand Mika Immonen a donut in the first round. Orcollo started out the set by breaking and running two racks, and then played three-rail position on the 8 to run the third. The fourth rack he looked at for a minute or two before running out, and after putting the fifth rack away, Immonen was heard to emit a “wow” from his chair. An empty break allowed Immonen to the table, but all that sitting down did not bode well, and he rattled his last ball to allow Orcollo to clear. Immonen began rubbing his temples at this point, not even watching the match. The last two racks Orcollo broke and ran out to win the set 8-0.“I got lucky on the breaks, but I played well,” said Orcollo, master of the understatement. “I had good sleep last night, and that’s why I played so good today.”IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship ForumsVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image GalleryIn the televised match-up this morning in the first round of the IPT’s North American Open, “Rocket” Rodney Morris went hill-hill against Efren Reyes and walked away the winner thanks to some erratic play on behalf of the Hall of Famer.
The match was fairly even throughout, with the lead changing several times. Neither player was at his best, though, which was obvious because of their uncharacteristic errors. But Morris was his usual effervescent self and entertained the crowd. At 5-all, Morris froze the cue ball to the 8 and had a tough time maneuvering to shoot over it but played the 10 up the rail. “Come on baby! For your country!” he yelled as it dropped. Morris won that rack and then broke and ran the next to reach the hill 7-5. He came up dry on his next break and screeched, and the two players traded a couple of innings before Reyes won. An empty break, though, put Morris back in control; however, he hooked himself for his last solid and hung a kick shot, and Reyes made it hill-hill. This time it was his turn to hook himself, which he did for his last solid, and after he hung a bank attempt, Morris cleared to win 8-7.Was there ever a doubt? Morris laughed. “There were a bunch of doubts and a bunch of give-ups and a bunch of ‘I got him’s.’ It was a seesaw match because we both made some mental errors there, and you could see the nerves were in play a lot that match. It was a hard-fought battle.”Will the nerves be dissipated now that the first match is out of the way? “Definitely. It can’t get any worse than that.”Another hill-hill battle was played by Corey Deuel and Oliver “The Machine” Ortmann, in which Deuel had an incredible comeback. Down 6-1, Deuel felt the match turn around when Ortmann missed his last ball to let him back in the match. He cleared and then broke and ran two racks to bring the score to 6-4. A scratch on the break, though, saw Ortmann run out to reach the hill, but then Ortmann came up empty on his break. Deuel dished up to make it hill-hill and then won the final rack for the win.“Stuff started going my way,” affirmed Deuel. “I trickled a ball in, the last one rolling, he was out-breaking me and getting easy run-outs. All my run-outs were like impossible and that last one … I can’t believe I got out from there. I ended up jacking myself up over the one and had to make a long shot and back-cut the eight and happened to get out.”In the second round, Deuel plays Immonen on the televised table, while Morris meets Ortmann and Orcollo will attempt to run seven racks against Reyes.Quick LinksPlayer StatsPrize Money Breakdown Round 6 GROUP 82R.
