Owen Loses First Match of the IPT Billiard EventGabe Owen just received his first loss of the billiards tournament from reigning World All-Around champion Jason Miller, who joined the IPT last January by winning their qualification event at the Derby City Classic. “I lost,” Owen said dejectedly. “I made a couple of mistakes, and he had some real good rolls. He missed a couple balls, and every time he did it, he got away with it. Then I missed a ball to tie it up, and that was pretty much it. I played bad and got every bad roll. The group’s tough, I gotta play Luat next. I gotta win this next match … muuuuuust wiiiiin,” he intoned. “I’m gotta win at least two of the next three, but I’m betting I will need all three.”IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship ForumsVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image GalleryOnly three players now remain undefeated for the event: Mick Hill, Francisco Bustamante, and Karl Boyes, who also has the highest games-won percentage now, having dethroned Corey “The Prince of Pool” Deuel. “Rocket” Rodney Morris still holds the break and run-out record, having amassed 42 out of 106 total matches played.
Starting out the day with a win, Jason “Dark Horse” Kirkwood scored over Kazuo Furuta 8-5. “I was down two to nothing and then came back, and we seesawed from there. I was a little shaky, but I think it was more because I was hungry. I felt pretty good and I’m happy to get that first win,” said Kirkwood, who will play Tony Chohan in the third round.Besting fellow American James Walden, a qualifier winner, in their hill-hill match, Tony Robles was humble, saying, “Words can’t explain. Sometimes the pool gods are with you. Yesterday I won three hill-hill matches in order to make it into next round, and had I lost the last one, Jasmin Ouschan would have beaten me by a half-point, from what I heard. So far so good—I’m fortunate and I’m looking forward to the next matches. I feel calm and relaxed … I feel great.” Other US players to win their second-round matches were Danny Harriman, Charlie Bryant, Shannon Daulton, Larry Nevel, and Nick Varner, who defeated Steve Moore in a double-hill match. From being down 5-1, Moore fought his way back into the match to pass Varner and reach the hill, breaking and running out the last four racks to do so. He came up empty on his last break and never saw the table again.Alex Pagulayan lost to fellow countryman Francisco Bustamante 8-4—Bustamante broke and ran out four games in a row to start off with a huge lead. Dennis Orcollo won 8-5 over David Matlock, Ronato Alcano defeated Darren Appleton 8-7, Efren Reyes won 8-5 over Yannick Beaufils, and Antonio Lining bested Mika Immonen 8-2.Player Stats and Prize MoneyRound 3 GROUP 69GROUP 70GROUP 71GROUP 72C.
