Owen Takes Music City 9-Ball Open Title
Gabe Owen managed to hold off the determined Buddy Hall in order to claim the 20th Annual Music City 9-Ball Open title. Hosted by JOB Billiards in Madison, TN, this event was held January 18-21, winding down in the early hours of Monday morning.
The 62-year-old Hall was in top form all day, facing down young champions on every side. He sent Jason Klatt home early with seventh place 11-9 and then bested Chad Vilmont 11-5 to reach the quarterfinal match against Brandon Ashcraft. The Hall of Famer put a six-pack on Ashcraft, obliterating him 11-1.
The young South Dakota player Shane Van Boening made a strong appearance in Nashville after his successes in Louisville, and he and Owen struggled for possession of the hot seat, which ultimately went to Owen 11-9. Now on the west side, Van Boening matched up with Hall and tried changing to the slow break. With little success there, he went back to his regular smashing break, but even so, the double-hill match went to Hall.
Now having played for 17 hours straight, Hall appeared exhausted in the final match against Owen. He put up a good fight, and his patented smooth stroke was still in action, but Owen dominated the set filled with safeties and won 11-3.
