Players Ready for Second RoundWest Jefferson, OH’s Dee Adkins won his match over Ronato Alcano of the Philippines 8-4 in today’s first round. Several years ago, Adkins had a broken right arm, and being right-handed, was out of commission for some time.IPT discussion forumDay 5 image galleryMatch schedule“It really is affected in the mornings or when it’s damp out. The top of the bone is an inch above the bottom bone. I had a three-inch blood clot in my chest after falling two-and-a-half stories, so when my arm was broke they just tied it to my chest and I had it like that for eight months while I was trying to get rid of the blood clot. So after eight months they wanted to do surgery, but I was done with the doctor thing … I started playing one-pocket left-handed for a while then started tenderly playing with my right hand. It’s not one-hundred percent, and I need to get it fixed—right now I want to secure my spot on the IPT first. I hate to have the surgery and then I’m done. It’s so important to get on this year because next year it’s going to be a battle to push your way in.”
In a battle of big breaks, Larry Nevel and Shawn “The Love Sponge” Putnam matched up, with Nevel, a former All-Around Derby City Classic champion, skating through with an 8-3 win.“My break was more effective that match,” said Nevel briefly after the match, and then added, when asked how he felt going into the rest of the day, “I always feel confident.”Ralf Souquet methodically picked his way through his match with Evgeny Stalev to win 8-4, though at 7-2, Souquet hooked himself for the 8 ball, which cost him. There were two all-Filipino matches in the first round. Rodolfo Luat and Dennis Orcollo traded racks all the way to double-hill before Luat squeaked by, and Efren Reyes matched up with Santos Sambajon Jr in another hill-hill bout that saw “The Magician” win the final rack.“My first match I play Santos, hill-hill I don’t make a ball on the break. I play good, but I don’t make a ball on the break. It’s very hard to win if you don’t make a ball on the break.”When asked about the rest of the day he said, “I don't know—there are a lot of good players and I’m not sure.”Some surprises in this first round were France’s Yannick Beaufils over Alex Pagulayan 8-6, Dave Matlock defeating Antonio Lining of the Philippines 8-5, and Rico Diks, who qualified for this event in Pratteln, Sweden, besting Rafael Martinez 8-3.Team Europe did well in the first round, with Marcus Chamat, Daryl Peach, and Niels Feijen all winning their matches.Round 4 Group 74Group 75C.
