Pool World Loses Another Icon By InsidePOOL Staff On Saturday, February 19, the world of billiards lost another icon, as Johnny Ervolino passed away at a hospital in Las Vegas, NV. He had suffered a heart attack only a week earlier but succumb to a second one during the morning hours Saturday. Ervolino began playing when he was a teenager and continued to wow audiences and opponents until 2004 when his health started to go downhill. He was 69 years old. Most known for his abilities in straight pool, Ervolino was also a great one-pocket player as well. He won two all-around titles during his career, and played against some of the best players of his time, including Nick Varner and Steve Mizerak. But one of his greatest feats was his run of 333 balls, which good friend Mike Casamassima witnessed about two years ago. Bill Finnegan, who runs the NYC Tour, also knew Ervolino and said that he was one of the top players of his time. "He was a great player-one of the best players in the world." During his career, Ervolino reached number two in the world ranking, but now, as friends and family say good-bye, they'll remember him as the best player they ever knew.
