Putnam Prevails at Brunswick Pro Players ChampionshipBy InsidePOOL StaffAfter suffering a defeat to Fabio Petroni in the hot seat match, Shawn Putnam came back to unseat the Italian champion in the finals to win the 2005 Brunswick Pro Players Championship. The event began on Thursday, March 17, with a full field of 64 players and was the second UPA stop of the year. Last month’s stop, held in Pittsburgh, PA, was also won by Putnam over Charlie Williams.Former U.S. Open champion Jeremy “Double J” Jones matched up with Charlie Bryant in the quarterfinals, which turned out to be almost a wipeout. Nothing went Bryant’s way, and Jones was on the hill before Bryant had lodged one game. Putnam and Petroni battled it out in the hot seat match, but “it all came down to the lag,” as Putnam put it. At hill-hill, Petroni played a great if rather unconventional out to win 10-9. The semifinals seesawed to 4 each before Putnam pulled ahead to an 8-5 lead. Jones put a couple more games under his belt, but it was Putnam who won 10-7 after Jones fouled on the 6 ball in the last rack.Petroni took an early two-game lead in the final match and kept it until Putnam knotted the score at 4. He then turned the tables on the Italian and created a lead of his own, moving up to 8-5. A missed 6 ball by “The Love Sponge” gave Petroni another rack, but an excellent long-rail kick shot on the 1 ball as a retort to a Petroni safety put Putnam on the hill.
