Reno Open Commenced with Huge Turnout The twice-annual Reno Open kicked off on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at the Sands Regency Hotel & Casino in Reno, NV. A total of 198 players came out to make up the field of professional and amateur players who wanted to win part of the $23,000-added money. The next Reno Open champ will be determined on Sunday night when the tournament concludes. Day One saw Dave "Big Wave" Hemmah get washed up on the shore by John Schmidt after he was defeated in a very close match. Stan Alameda was another who was defeated on day one, when handicap tourney winner Tony Chohan prevailed in their match. With 16 tables busy every two hours, the action was nonstop, which made it difficult to determine which matches to watch.
Wednesday brought some interesting action when Tony Annigoni met Ryoku Onaga on the winner's side. Annigoni bolted out to a commanding 8-2 lead early in the match, but Onaga took six straight racks to bring the match to hill-hill. The frustration was easy to see in Annigoni's face when he missed normally makeable shots that gave Onaga the comeback opportunity. Annigoni was setting up for his shot on the 7 in the final match when, to his surprise, Onaga conceded the 9-ball to allow him the win. In another nail-biter, Barry Emerson faced off against Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich, who was fresh off of his Joss NE 9-Ball Finale win. These two players traded the lead back and forth for most of the game, finally reaching hill-hill. Emerson took the win 9-8 and sent Basavich to the west side of the chart. There were other matches that were not as close on Wednesday, exampled by Chohan defeating Robb Saez 9-3 in a lightening-quick match and Cliff Joyner winning 9-3 over Bill "The Houckster" Houck.
