Reno Open Going Strong The Reno Open is still going strong, with three days left of play. Defending champion Mike Davis, looking calm and collected, met San Diego player Dan Wallace on Thursday afternoon. Davis took a 2-0 lead before yielding the table after failing to make a ball on the break. Wallace was in a deep trap but brought applause from the crowd after he carefully evaluated the situation and made a long combination to escape and win the game with only one shot. They went on to battle to 6-6, with Davis repeatedly missing chances to get the match under control and Wallace taking advantage. However, Davis got hot when it counted, winning the final three games to take the match 9-6.Also progressing in the winners’ side matches were Alex Pagulayan over Arturo Rivera 9-4, Charles "Hillbilly” Bryant 9-4 over Jay Hlavachek, Santos Sambajon Jr. 9-3 over Chet Itow, Rodney Morris 9-3 over Canadian Stan Tourangeau, Max Eberle 9-2 over Steve Sones, and Scott "The Freezer" Frost over room owner Danny Kuykendall 9-3.
The action really heated up on Thursday evening when Jose Parica met recent Hard Times Jamboree one-pocket champ Billy Palmer. All the other tables quieted when Parica took a commanding 7-1 lead, making a series of breathtaking shots. It seemed Palmer spent virtually the entire match watching the master work him over, and when he got his chances, he failed to do anything with them until his rally to come within five games at 7-2. However, Parica got back to business, taking the next game to go up 8-2. A dry break by Parica gave his opponent new life, and Palmer won the next three games to bring the score to 8-5. Parica put on a clinic, making a number of difficult shots and then pleasing the crowd with a 4-9 combination to win 9-5.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
