Reyes Masters Deuel in One-Pocket FinalBy Justyn Barnes, InsidePOOL StaffEfren “Bata” Reyes proved too strong for young gun Corey Deuel in the Derby City Classic one-pocket final in Louisville, Kentucky, this evening, running out to a 3-1 victory. Deuel went into the match knowing he had to defeat the Reyes twice, having previously bought back into the event, but some impatient shots cost him dearly. After losing the first game, Deuel came out an 8-3 winner in the next rack, during which both players exhibited some deft touches and creative shot-making. Whereas Reyes was prepared to wait for his openings, however, Deuel was always liable to force the issue, and it proved to be his undoing in the third rack. Reyes built a 6 to -2 lead and then played a series of tight safeties until Deuel finally cracked, allowing him to run out a big 8 to -3 winner.
Worse was to follow for Deuel. Turning down the strategic opportunity to bank the 1, he made the 3 over the pocket instead, sending the cue ball smashing into the pack, pushing them all towards Reyes’s pocket. It was a schoolboy error, and Reyes skillfully ran nine and out from –1 to seal his second successive Derby City Classic one-pocket win. With one day of the tournament to play, Reyes and Deuel are now the main contenders to claim the $25,000 Master Of The Table all-around prize. Both players are also undefeated going into Round 7 of the 9-ball event, but they face tough competition from the likes of Mika Immonen, Francisco Bustamante, and Johnny Archer in that discipline.
