Round Two Complete at the BCA Open 9-Ball Championships By InsidePOOL StaffThe second round of the BCA Open 9-Ball Championships has wound down, with no one eliminated as of yet. There were some tight matches on Monday, with many comebacks as well. The event, being held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV, continues all week and will conclude this Saturday afternoon.The world all-around champion in 2002, Larry Nevel, played an excellent match Dei-Wei Chang in the late evening round. Making three or four balls on each break, Nevel completely shut out his opponent. He reached the hill when Chang still had nothing on the board but scratched on the break. Chang cleared the table, broke, and scratched on his object ball, and Nevel ran out for the 11-1 win.
Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer came back from a 7-2 deficit against Hisashi Yamamoto to knot the score at 9 and then miss the 9 ball in the corner pocket. Yamamoto took the hill, but Archer then broke and ran out to tie again. After fouling on a jump shot attempt, Yamamoto was forced to give Archer ball in hand for the 11-10 victory.A great comeback was seen by Teddy Garrahan in his match against Francisco “Django” Bustamante. The Filipino gained a 5-0 lead before Garrahan got on the board. Slowly fighting back, the New Jersey player brought the score to 10-8 before finally succumbing.Julie Kelly had a tough match with Belinda Calhoun in which she was up 8-5 and missed a relatively easy shot on the 9. She then found herself up 8-6 and missed the 9 again. In the next rack, the Irish native did pocket the 9 ball, winning the match 9-7.The top ladies in the winners’ bracket all advanced. Karen Corr had a 9-5 victory against Angelina Paglia, Allison Fisher defeated Melissa Morris 9-6, and Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
