Ruberto Takes Memorial Billiard TournamentFirst Annual Robert Dionne Memorial Tournament / Chelmsford, MA
by Rick Davis
A 32-player field gathered at Country Club USA in Chelmsford, MA, the weekend of January 20-21 to fight for their share of the $3,000 prize fund, but it was Tony Ruberto who came back from a late defeat to claim the event.
The event quickly reached the hot seat match, where Ruberto faced Tom McGongale after each had crushed one-half of the winners’ side bracket. Mcgongale took the initiate early and didn’t look back as he stormed through the match 9-3.
Over on the one-loss side, Ruberto faced the waiting Dave Fernadez, where they clashed in every rack. Finally, tied at 8-all, Fernadez scratched on the break, leaving Ruberto to run out and advance to the finals.
The finals looked to be a quick match at first, as Ruberto took a 13-7 lead in the race to 15. McGonagle, though, would not be counted out, and he clawed his way back to 13-12. It was an impressive start for a comeback, but he ran out of juice as Ruberto took the next two racks to win the match and the event.
This event collected $700 to be donated to Saint Jude’s Research in Robert Dionne’s name. The next event will be at Country Cue Billiards in Peabody, MA, on February 11.
