Sambajon Nets World Summit of PoolBy InsidePOOL StaffSantos Sambajon Jr. came through a field of 68 at the World Summit of Pool, held this week in New York City’s Grand Central Station, to defeat Mike Davis in the final match. Sambajon, who recently was runner-up at the BCA Open 9-Ball Championship, also came in second to Davis at the Reno Open in December 2003, making this victory that much sweeter.Sambajon and Davis met in the hot seat match after Sambajon bested Corey Deuel 11-9 and Davis sent Danny Harriman to the one-loss side 11-3. The two were neck and neck all the way. Sambajon left himself poor position on the 9 ball and missed, giving Davis the hill 6-5. A break-and-run by Sambajon made it a nailbiter, and when Davis fouled in the final rack, Sambajon took the match 7-6.
After Strickland bested Harriman 11-6 in the quarterfinals, he met Davis in the semis. Tied at 1 apiece, Strickland failed at a 5-9 combo and seemed unable to shake it off. Davis won the next six games in a row to win the match 7-1.The finals, a rematch between Davis and Sambajon, were filled with incredible play. Davis took the initial lead, but then the two traded games, with Sambajon reaching the hill first. In the final rack, Davis missed the 1 ball, and Sambajon was able to clear the table for his 7-5 victory.
