Sambajon Wins One Pocket Event at Hard Timesby InsidePOOL StaffThe first leg of the Summer Jamboree at Hard Times in Sacramento, CA, has ended and crowned a new champion - Santos Sambajon, Jr. In a repeat of the hot seat match, Sambajon faced off with Scott "The Freezer" Frost, thought by many to be one of the top one pocket players in the world, and defeated him 4-2 in the finals.Frost made it to the hot seat match against the diminutive Filipino by defeating Tony Melendez, Eric Krause, Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan, and Billy Palmer, while Sambajon's trek through the winners' bracket was equally perilous, considering his wins over Danny Basavich, Bart Mahoney, Dan Wallace, and Chris MacDonald.
Sambajon, who has been runner-up in this event many times at Hard Times but never a first-place holder, swept the hot seat match 3-0, sending Frost off to await the results of the fourth-place match against Pagulayan and Palmer. Palmer triumphed 3-2, relegating "The Lion" to fourth place, and went off for his rematch with Frost.Frost, who handed Palmer his first loss 3-0 earlier, was no nicer the second time around and again gave his opponent the 3-0 smackdown, setting up a chance for him to gain revenge upon Sambajon in the finals. However, it was not to be - Sambajon allowed Frost only two games in their rematch but ultimately won the finals 4-2.Hard Times in Sacramento is 13, 800 square feet of action, with 33 tables, 10 of which are Brunswick Gold Crown IVs. All of the tables are covered in 860 Simonis cloth. The 9-ball event begins Friday, June 13, 2003, at 1 PM.
