Santos Sambajon, Jr., Wins Joss Rochester Eventby InsidePOOL StaffThis week's Joss Northeast tour event was held at Pro Billiards Lounge in Rotterdam, New York. Not surprisingly, it was one of the tour regulars, Santos Sambajon, Jr., taking top honors again after he defeated Jarrod Clowery in the finals. The tour stop brought out some excellent local players, but most went home disappointed, including Karen Corr, who surprised everyone with her win over Jim Rempe three weeks ago in the finals. She was defeated first by Sambajon, making this event the third consecutive tournament they were at that they played each other, and then was eliminated by Ian Costello. Sambajon faced off with Clowery, another regular player on the tour, in the hot seat match. It looked like a sure victory for Clowery, as he reached the hill with the score 8-2. However, his opponent had other ideas. With a great show of determination, Sambajon tied the score at the hill. Adding to the tension in the room, he almost scratched after making the 7 ball in the case game, leaving the cue hanging in the pocket. Clowery's brief hopes were dashed as Sambajon went ahead and made the remaining two balls to defeat Clowery 9-8.
Ian Costello worked his way through the one-loss side of the bracket during the weekend to arrive in the semifinals and play Clowery for third place. Clowery, who reportedly has been exceptionally ill throughout the event, suffering from chills and fever, pulled through and won the match 9-6, going on to the rematch with Sambajon. The finals were tied 5-all when Sambajon, who won the Joss event two weeks ago at Spot Shots Billiards in Portland, Maine, caught fire and only allowed his opponent one more game before winning the final match 9-6. Tournament director Joe Tucker reported, "His last break was as good as anybody in the world could possibly ask for. Santos was rock solid."Next week, the Joss Northeast Tour will be holding a $5,000-added event at The Color of Money Billiards in Niagara Falls.1st - Santos Sambajon, Jr. $1,2002nd - Jarrod Clowery $8003rd - Ian Costello $6004th - Mike Zuglan $4505th/6th - Mike Minichello, Tom Acciavatti $2757th/8th - Karen Corr, Jimmy Gilday $150
