Santos Snaps Off Jay Swanson Memorial Hilary Morse, InsidePOOL StaffThe Eighth Annual Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament had a confirmed 192 players on Saturday morning and cut down to the final 48 for Sunday morning play. The tournament was grueling and exhausting, considering the daunting task of getting through a field of 192 players in a two-day period with races to 9 on the winners’ side and 7 on the one-loss, but in the end, Santos Sambajon came out the 2004 Jay Swanson Memorial winner. After getting defeated by Jerry “Baby Huey” Matchin 9-6, Sambajon made a great comeback through the one-loss side to win the event. Sambajon played Ian Castillo, who was waiting in the hot seat after defeating talented young Orange County player Marshall Jung 9-6.
Santos Sambajon and Marshall Jung played to determine who would move into the finals to face Castello. Jung with his methodical style and cat-like stance started the match off with a 2-1 lead before Sambajon tied the score up to make it 3-3. At 5-4, Sambajon broke and ran to go up 6-4. In the next rack, Sambajon missed the 5 ball, and Jung played safe, leaving Sambajon a difficult kick shot. When Sambajon fouled, Jung got ball in hand to run out the rack, pulling within a game of his opponent. Jung broke the next rack and had the misfortune to scratch, giving Sambajon ball in hand to run out and win the match 7-5 and to leave Jung with third-place prize money of $1,200. Costello had a strong 3-0 lead in a race to 13 as Sambajon started the match off rough, rattling two straight-in 8 balls. Sambajon recovered easily as the match went back and forth until the score hit 4-all. From there Sambajon took his foot-and-a-half bridge and easily defeated Costello to take the first place $3,000 prize money. Costello received $1,800 for second. Next year’s Jay Swanson Memorial tournament will take place sometime in January. The date will be posted sometime within the next month, and the field will be open to 192 players.Results:1st Santos Sambajon $3,0002nd Ian Castillo $1,8003rd Marshall Jung $1,2004th Aaron Aragon $8005th/6th Jose Parica, “LJ” John Pasquerella $6007th/8th Tony Annigoni, Jimmy Mendoza $4009th-12th Max Eberle, Amar Kang, Jerry Matchin, Bernardo ChavezVisit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
