The Ladies Spirit Tour celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a marathon tournament event at Wally’s Billiards & Sportsroom in Lakeland, FL, where 34 women billiard players battled for first-place prize money and the EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball Championship qualifier. The competition attracted WPBA touring pros Tracie Hines and Ellen Van Buren, as well as tough players such as Jeannie Seaver, Niki Rasmussen, and Tracie Hines. Tour regular Debbie Schjodt was the one to walk away with the biggest prize, capturing not only first place but the qualifier as well.
In Sunday’s money matches, Schjodt, who is sponsored by Que Perfect Cues, and Stephanie Mitchell, sponsored by Stroker’s Billiards, faced off for the Queen of the Hill spot. Proving her determination to win the qualifier, Schjodt scored an easy 7-3 victory, sending Mitchell to the one-loss side. There she squeaked by with a hill-hill win over Kelly Jones to earn a rematch in the true double-elimination format.
A series of detrimental errors on Schjodt’s part jeopardized her position until she began firing balls in, quickly reaching the hill 6-3. But Mitchell was no pushover and ended up winning the first set double-hill, forcing a second. Schjodt won the lag but was unable to make a productive game. Neither player took a commanding lead for the first five games, but it was Schjodt who was ready to finish the game with a 7-5 score.
