Schmidt Sends Jones Packing at the World SummitBy InsidePOOL StaffIn an incredible nailbiter of a match in the one-loss side, John Schmidt sent former U.S. Open champion Jeremy Jones home early after defeating him 11-10 at the World Summit of Pool, held this week in New York City’s Grand Central Station. The match seesawed all the way to the hill, and Schmidt came up dry on his last break. With few options on the 1 ball, Jones opted for a bank but missed. After banking the 1 into the corner pocket, Schmidt missed a cut on the 3 in the side; however, Jones wasn’t able to run out and missed a long cut on the 4. Leaving himself hooked behind the 9 ball for the 5, Schmidt was forced to kick but scratched. With ball in hand, Jones tried for a carom off the 7 into the side, but the 5 froze there instead of dropping. Schmidt executed a successful kick shot on the 5 and, back in line for the remainder of the rack, ran out for his 11-10 win.
In the winners’ bracket matches, Corey Deuel defeated Dave Hemmah 11-5 and will meet Santos Sambajon Jr., who bested Rodney Morris 11-2. Danny Harriman won his match against Earl Strickland 11-2 and will later play Mike Davis, who was victorious over Danny Basavich 11-9.In the one-loss side, Jose Garcia will play Strickland, Schmidt will play Basavich, Brandon Ashcraft will play Hemmah, and Eberle will play Morris.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news on the World Summit of Pool tournament.
