Schmidt and Ortmann Notch WinsThe televised matches in the first round have ended, with the straight pool players taking the wins. On one table, Germany’s Oliver “The Machine” Ortmann, who holds 42 German national titles and is a 28-time Euro Tour champion, bested road man Mark Tademy (better known as Mark Tad) 8-2.Visit the IPT North American Open image galleryDay 1 image galleryDay 2 image galleryMatch scheduleOn the other table, in a slightly longer match, Southern California’s Keith “Earthquake” McCready and John “Mr. 400” Schmidt matched up. McCready, famous for his portrayal of Grady Seasons in “The Color of Money” and his line, “It’s like a nightmare, isn’t it?” reached the hill first with Schmidt at 6 but badly missed the 8 ball. Unable to believe his luck, Schmidt cleared his balls from the table to make the match double-hill. A dry break from Schmidt turned the table back over to McCready, whose fourth shot wobbled … but still dropped. “Time out for me, baby,” McCready announced, walking away to grab a bottle of water.
Once back at the table and facing a simple layout, he rattled the 6 ball—his last solid. Schmidt leapt up and tried to play a combo on two of his stripes but missed; however, he had planned that if he missed, his opponent wouldn’t have a shot, as the 6 ball was on the top rail and the cue at the bottom. Attempting a long-rail cross bank to play off of Schmidt’s stripe, McCready misses the 6. With five stripes left, Schmidt smoothly pocketed the remaining balls for his hill-hill win.“That match with McCready, I got pretty lucky to win,” Schmidt commented. “He missed the eight in the side when I was down seven-six, and then he missed a ball straight-in at hill-hill, but I did hook myself on three or four eights to put him on the hill, so I helped him a little bit. All in all, I’m thrilled to win the match. A win’s a win. Keith’s always tough“He did really make some great outs in the middle of the set, but the very end was horrible. He’s kind of cagey—he’ll get out sometimes and bank balls—he banked out a couple of times. He knows how to play eight-ball, and if he just doesn’t miss a straight-in once in a while, he’s really tough to beat.”Round 2 Groups Match schedule for July 25, 2006Group 41Kirkwood, JasonHeuwagen, LeeEllerby, SarahHarper, CoreyBasavich, DanielGarrahan, TheodoreGroup 42Bennett, KeithPagulayan, AlexMonday, SamOrme, ChrisFrost, ScottVarner, NickGroup 43Ginn, AnthonyStrickland, EarlPaez, IsmaelPinegar, JonathanWalden, JamesHofstatter, GerdaGroup 44Hundal, RajDiks, RicoOwen, GabeKoukiadakis, AndreasBroxson, DavidBroumpton, RichardGroup 45Reyes, EfrenBustamante, FranciscoHarrison, PhilipAdkins, DeeMacias, JonathanKlasovic, AndrejaGroup 46Sigel, MikeManalo, MarlonJones, Loree JonLohtander, MarkoCatledge, WayneHann, QuintenGroup 47Boyes, KarlFisher, AllisonAbood, GaryPutnik, IvicaBarger, FloydBeckley, JeffGroup 48Orcollo, DennisAlcano, RonatoSan Souci, GeorgeDeuel, CoreyWims, JohnValle, GandyGroup 49Archer, JohnnyDaulton, ShannonMcKenna, RobertImmonen, MikaO'Sullivan, RonnieStorm, TomGroup 50Hohmann, ThorstenOrtmann, OliverTot, SandorPeach, DarylTademy, MarkCalderon, JerryGroup 51Hatch, DennisSchmidt, JohnBreedlove, GeorgeFu, JianboMcCready, KeithJones, SammyGroup 52Souquet, RalfButera, SalJoyner, CliffStalev, EvgenyWetch, JimmyMajid, ImranGroup 53Zimmerman, MichaelLining, AntonioLuat, RodolfoVickery, HowardPutnam, ShawnGroce, BrianGroup 54Foldes, VilmosEckert, RalphWatson, GerryYounger, JoelMekari, TomokiPotier, PaulGroup 55Marquez, MarcoMartinez, RafaelMorris, RodneyDavenport, KimBeaufils, YannickHopkins, AllenGroup 56Raybone, NeilMoore, SteveNevel, LarryOkumura, TakeshiJuva, MarkusJahnke, BernardGroup 57Petroni, FabioAppleton, DarrenMontal, EdwinJones, JeremyHunter, BobbySambajon, SantosGroup 58Chamat, MarcusMorris, CarlFrank, TroyWilliams, CharlieBartram, ChristopherTownsend, ScottyGroup 59Chohan, TonyHill, MichaelSchmidt, MichaelGay, LeilLely, AlexFeijen, NielsGroup 60Salvas, LucVan den Berg, NickKucharo, JonHogue, GregMatlock, DavidMladenovic, GoranVisit Inside POOL Magazine for the latest news from the sport of pool and billiards and the IPT North American Open 8-Ball Championship.
