Second Day Complete at World Open Billiards TournamentThe World Open 8-Ball Championship billiard tournament has finished its second day, eliminating another 40 of the world’s best players. A total of 120 players out of the original 200 will return for Tuesday’s matches, and only half of that number will make it to Wednesday’s rounds. The break seems to be the leading cause of problems that the players are reporting. Nick Van den Berg of The Netherlands won his last match against Brian Groce and reported, “I won all four of my matches. In the beginning I was nervous and a little stressed, not because of the matches but just the tournament. Been under a lot of stress the last month, I played in a lot of tournaments … big ones. But I did good today. Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image Gallery“The breaks are tough, maybe forty percent I made balls. I think tomorrow I will break a little softer than today. I’ve got the stamina, so I feel good for tomorrow.”American dark horse Jason Kirkwood won three matches out of four today in a tough bracket that included Marco Marquez, Vincent Facquez, Monica Webb, and Jonathan Macias. Marquez and Webb did not advance. “It went pretty well today until my last match,” Kirkwood stated. “I was up six-three, then the guy ran four on me. But at least I advance—I am happy because I really didn’t play that well. My break was failing me a lot but I’m still hangin’.
“I played a little lazy today, but I don’t know why—it’s kinda a bad time to play last, but I got through and hopefully tomorrow will be better. I’m definitely gonna work on my break for sure. I’m not really missing too many balls, but something has gotta change. I feel good and I’m ready.”However, some surprises were in store for the U.S. when Shawn Putnam failed to advance, having only won one match today, and fellow Ohioan Troy Frank didn’t notch a single match, clearing the way for Ronnie Wiseman to advance.Adam Wheeler and Corey Deuel, who bested Mike Sigel 8-4 in the final round, advanced from the same group, and “Rocket” Rodney Morris led his group with three wins, tied with Robert McKenna from the UK. Dennis Hatch came through with flying colors, winning all four matches today. Jason Miller and Ike Runnels also advance from that group. Though he lost to Raj Hundal in a hill-hill match, George Breedlove advances with three wins, as does Hundal. From the Philippines, Edwin Montal had three wins, Santos Sambajon Jr. had three wins, and Ramil Gallego had two. All three will advance to Tuesday’s rounds. In the ladies’ corner, Jasmin Ouschan advanced with two wins (the disqualified Tom Storm was in her group), as did Allison Fisher. Monica Webb did not advance, and neither did Miyuki Sakai, Robin Dodson, or Helena Thornfeld.
