Second Day of Big Apple Challenge Reveals Few SurprisesBy Robert AnthonyDeep into the second day of the Second Annual Master Billiard Big Apple 9-Ball Challenge in New York City, the 93 entrants are being slowly whittled down. As of midnight Friday, 20 players had been sent packing. While there has been solid play, there have been only a few surprising upsets. After taking a bye in the first round, up-and-comer Robb Saez managed to put himself into the one-loss bracket after missing his call window by five minutes in the second match. Raj Hundal, who won his first UK Pro 9-Ball Tour event in Bristol in March, defeated Santos Sambajon Jr. Filipino legend Jose Parica stopped Danny “Kid Delicious” Basavich in his climb to the top. And in what promised to be one of the more exciting matches of the day, Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer sent local heavyweight Frankie Hernandez to the loser’s side.
Last year’s Big Apple champion, Charlie Williams, is still in contention with his victory over Timmy Hall, but most of the remaining pool superstars have performed as expected. Francisco Bustamante, Mika Immonen, Tony Robles, Rodney Morris, and Ralf Souquet are all still in the winner’s bracket. On the one-loss side, experience seems to be prevailing. George “Ginky” San Souci defeated Jason Brown, who previously took fourth place in the 2004 NYC Open 9-Ball Championship. Grady “The Professor” Mathews prevailed against Michael Yednak, who had been defeated by Charlie Williams in the first round. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
