Second Round Finishing UpMike Sigel grabbed another win in the second round, this time over Wayne Catledge. Only allowing Catledge sporadic wins, Sigel swept through with an 8-3 final score. The loquacious “Mouth” commented, “I could win the whole thing, but I don’t care if I am not playing good. I would donate the money—that’s how much I care about it, even thought I know it’s a lot of money. I’m making too many mistakes, which is why I am upset. I haven’t played anyone yet, so it’s okay, but I can’t play against guys like Efren, Archer, Bustamante while I am making four or five mistakes a match. You could play perfect against those guys and still lose. Shots I’ve been missing, like cuts up a rail or barely missing position—I’ve been doing it for fifteen years and it’s no problem, but here it won’t make it. I get upset playing bad—even if I win. I can’t take a win like that—my ego is too big.”No ladies have managed a win in this round so far. Sarah Ellerby was bested by Lee Heuwagen 8-2, Allison Fisher lost to Gary Abood 8-2, and Loree Jon Jones suffered an 8-1 loss to Marlon Manalo.Day 3 image galleryMatch schedule
Several surprises have occurred in this round. “Rocket” Rodney Morris went up against Rafael Martinez, a scrappy player from the West Coast, and reached the hill with Martinez at 4. Martinez, though, had other plans that did not include Morris winning their match, and won the next two racks and then broke and ran out the last two for the 8-7 win. Also, David Broxson defeated Raj “Hitman” Hundal by a narrow 8-6 margin. Broxson qualified for the North American Open 8-Ball Championship at Champion Billiards Sports Café in Frederick, MD, in early June and has a 1-1 win ratio today.Another surprise was Sam Monday’s match against former world champion and reigning U.S. Open champion Alex Pagulayan. Monday qualified for this event in Raleigh, NC, with Steve Moore, and dealt “The Lion” a zero, which is bound to hurt Pagulayan’s games-won percentage.Teams Europe and Philippines are still doing well. Ralf Souquet just won his second-round match 8-1 against Jimmy Wetch, and Evgeny Stalev of Russia won by the same score over Imran Majid. Quinten Hann is still going strong, besting Finland’s Marko Lohtander 8-3, and Sandor Tot of Serbia won 8-5 over Germany’s Oliver Ortmann. Efren Reyes, Francisco Bustamante, Rodolfo Luat, and Dennis Orcollo all won their second-round matches as well.As for Team USA, Johnny Archer took some wind out of the sails of Ronnie O’Sullivan when he bested him 8-3. Hall of Famer Earl Strickland defeated Ismael “Morro” Paez 8-5, and George Breedlove played a tight match with John Schmidt but prevailed 8-6.
