The finals of the Music City Open ended with Shannon Daulton coming back to defeat Gabe Owen twice to win the first-place title. Daulton lost to Owen earlier in the hot seat match and then defeated Shawn "The Love Sponge" Putnam in the one-loss side, relegating Putnam to third place, while Daulton went on to avenge his only loss against Owen.Daulton won the Midnight Madness mini tournament that began early Sunday morning and ended at approximately 8 AM Sunday. He reportedly got only four hours of sleep before showing up for the semifinals. The finals began a short while after the playoff game between the Tennessee Titans and the Oakland Raiders kicked off, which luckily did not cause any distractions on the room. In his first set against Owen, Daulton quickly took the lead, getting up 3-0 on his opponent. At that point, Owen managed to get on the board, bringing the score to 3-2 Daulton. Daulton then played a nice 1-9 carom to get to 4-2 and proceeded to run the next seven racks in a row for the win at 11-2.
For the second and last set of the finals, tournament director Scott Smith chose to move the players one table over, citing as the reason the corner ball went every time on the first table. Owen won the first two games, then missed a tough combo, and Daulton ran the next two racks to tie the score at 2-all. Owen managed to get ahead 6-3 against his opponent, but then he missed a shot on the 1 ball. Daulton took every advantage, won that rack, and then again ran the next seven racks perfectly to win the set 11-6. The well-mannered Owen never got out of his seat except to indicate a concession after every rack Daulton won.Daulton collected $3,500 for first place, while Owen settled for $1,750 for second place. Owen will be playing at the South Padre Island tournament in two weeks, while Daulton is thinking about participating in the Mid-Atlantic event this upcoming week.
