Snooker Legend Davis Records Fine Billiard WinSteve Davis, who only arrived in Manila on Saturday morning, got off to a flying start at the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship as he came from behind to beat highly rated Vietnamese player Thanh Nam Mguyen 8-6.Playing in the main arena at the magnificent PICC venue, the six-times World Snooker Champion looked a little shaky in the opening stages as Nguyen, a semi-finalist for his nation at the recent World Cup of Pool built up a solid 6-3 lead.Discuss the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship
With the alternate break format in operation lessening the comeback possibilities, Davis dug deep as he found his stride and squared the match up at six-all. He took the 14th rack to take the lead for the first time before some tight safety play gave him the opportunity to run out for an excellent first win.“It took me a little time to find my feet but I enjoyed it in the end. I know he’s a quality player but I stuck in there and with this format you always need a bit of luck to come from behind. The crowd was great and there is a real buzz about the place. I’ve got a couple of tough matches ahead of me but I’ll just relax and prepare myself,” said Davis.Elsewhere, Ralf Souquet made it two wins from two as he came through a hill-hill thriller with the classy Chang Jung-ling of Taiwan. ‘The Kaiser’ who beat Leonardo Andam yesterday now seems assured of a spot in the last 64 which gets underway on Wednesday.Souquet’s countryman, the methodical Michael Schmidt, has made it through to the single elimination courtesy of a good win over Korean Ryu Seong-wu who now plays Holland ’s Niels Feijen for the other spot.Former bronze medalist Marcus Chamat of Sweden heads Group 13 with a 100 per cent record and is guaranteed a slot in the knock-out stages. Jeong of Korea and qualifier Rudy Morta (Philippines) go head-to-head to join him.The first TV match of the day saw young Filipino sensation Jeff ‘Bata’ de Luna beat England's Kevin Uzzell 8-6. De Luna is hotly tipped here and is certainly not lacking in confidence.
