Souquet and Corr Take Top Honors at BCA Open in Vegasby InsidePOOL StaffThe BCA Open 9-Ball Championships have ended, with Karen Corr and Ralf Souquet in the winners' circle after two outstanding final matches. The women's finals began at 1 PM Saturday, and it was announced beforehand that the winner of the event would be the first player to win twice, as both Corr and Allison Fisher, her opponent, had taken the title once before. The first game started with Fisher running out to the 5 ball and then rattling it in the pocket, leaving an easy out for defending champion Corr. That miss set the pace for the remainder of the match, for while Corr played deliberately and aggressively, Fisher made several key errors and was off on a couple of safeties. When Corr reached the hill at 6-0, Fisher finally put one game under her belt, but the next game was all Corr's, who won the match 7-1. Their match took a little less than an hour to complete. Corr took home $15,000 for first place, while Fisher got $7,500.
The men's final match was a different matter altogether. Ralf Souquet met up with Francisco Bustamante in the race to 7, which started off fairly equally until Souquet gained a 5-2 lead over his nemesis. Bustamante came back to make it 5-4 but missed a two-rail bank in the next game, allowing Souquet to reach the hill. A couple of errors in the next two games led to a hill-hill match with Souquet breaking. He made two on the break but tried to play safe on the 2 ball and left his opponent a shot. Unfortunately for Bustamante, he missed, and Souquet, oozing concentration from every pore, ran the rest of the rack out to win the championship 7-6. Bustamante took $7,500 for second place, and first prize was $15,000. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest from the sport of billiards and pool.
