Still Reigning in New Jersey Corr is Undefeatedby Tori HiltyKaren Corr did it again, successfully defending her title to be the New Jersey State 9-Ball champion for a second year running. A sound defeat of English snooker champ Val Finnie capped the domination shown by Corr at this event, where the WPBA's number two player claimed the title undefeated. A field of 31 ladies descended on Herbert's Billiards in Seacaucus, NJ, to battle it out over the weekend of August 14-15, 2004, to see if the reigning Corr could be dethroned as the New Jersey State 9-Ball champion. The qualifier for the WPBA U.S. Open, however, did not go to Corr because of her pro status. In fact, Carol Clark and Morgan Steinman were the only two ladies who were contenders for the qualifier, since every other top-placing player already clinched a qualifier in past events. Clark edged out Steinman for it when she won on the hill because of an unfortunate scratch on the case 9 by Steinman, allowing her to move ahead to the hot seat match against Corr.The smooth skill the Irish snooker star demonstrated throughout the event did not fail her in her effort to remain undefeated. Corr sailed through the racks without letting Clark a chance to get on the board, sending her to the one-loss side with a 7-0 shutout.Finnie, who was sent to the one-loss side early in the tournament by former world champion Julie Kelly, was waiting for her after posting a win over Brenda Heras in the match to determine fourth place. With a great stroke and form, Finnie pulled through the semifinals victorious to earn a spot in the finals against Corr.Although the score of the final match was lopsided, a 9-1 final decision for Corr, the play in the match was not. Finnie's stroke and form were good but just not enough to post a win over Corr, whose knowledge of the nuances of 9-ball, in addition to her skill, have helped her climb to the top of the sport. Reacting to Corr's domination of the final match, Finnie stated, "She gave me a lesson."
