Stone Makes a Comeback
Viking Cue Amateur 9-Ball Tour / Galesburg, IL
by Rick Davis
March 11 brought the best amateurs in the area to Billiards On Main in Galesburg, IL, for the latest offering from the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour. With a 25-player field, the event boasted a strong field but it was Ryan Stone who surprised everyone with a huge comeback win.
In the hot seat match Michael Dunklin drilled David Tenley 5-1, sending Tenley west while Dunklin rested comfortably in the hot seat. On the one-loss side an interesting mix of matches unfolded. Scott Laird was nearly shut out by 14-year-old Liz Lovely, who drilled him 5-1, while Stone shut out Adam Benhke 5-0. Now on a roll, Stone whizzed past Lovely 5-0 in the quarterfinals then did the same to Tenley in the semifinals.
After a big comeback to see the finals, Stone was still hot as he scorched Dunklin 5-1 in the first set. With one final set to play Stone kept the heat on and in no time had destroyed Dunklin 5-2 in the final set to claim the event through an impressive string of wins.
