Surprises Pepper 5:30 p.m. RoundsThe fourth round of matches is winding down, and most of the players are gearing up for the fifth, final, and possibly determining match. There have been some surprises in this round, though.Karl Boyes, who qualified for the North American Open 8-Ball Championship in Corpus Christi, TX, but hails from Great Britain, played his last match of the day (and possibly the tournament) against Franciso Bustamante. He was playing well, broke and ran a total of three racks, and defeated Bustamante 8-6. Basically, I come from an English pool background where there is a lot of snooker cue action—it’s a lot more mechanic, if you like. I was missing a lot of balls and was playing only thirty percent of my game, so I went back to the old way and started it this morning.”Will he advance? “I am finished today—I’ve won one out of four. I think if the right things happen I can sneak in. I feel alright overall, just a bit disappointed.” Depending on the 8:00 p.m. round, Bustamante may or may not advance, as he only has one win today.
Croatia’s Ivica Putnik dealt Johnny Archer a fatal blow with his 8-3 win over “The Scorpion” in the fourth round. With only one win out of four, it will be almost impossible for Archer to advance to Thursday’s play.Mika Immonen defeated John Schmidt 8-5 for his second win of the day and will play Sandor Tot in the final round. “Every match is important,” Immonen emphasized, “but this one was very important to me. It looks like he [Schmidt] had already lost three and didn’t have a chance even if he beat me. He was on a little bit of a negative vibe after losing three, and that caught onto me a little, so I played crappy in the beginning but pulled it together with good runs when I needed it.”A devastating 8-2 loss was dealt to Paul Potier courtesy of Thorsten Hohmann. “I needed to beat Paul,” he explained, “because I’m one and one, and he has already one. Evgeny and Mick are already through, and they have the better average, so I needed to win. I ran six in a row and was supposed to run the set, but I missed the ball. It was a most important match for me.”Rafael Martinez is still unchallenged. He defeated Darren Appleton from the U.K. 8-5 and will play Steve Moore in his final match-up for today. Moore won his first match of the day against Carl “Houdini” Morris, a former world champion, 8-3. He will need to win over Martinez to advance.Others dangling on the edge of extinction are Dennis Hatch, who just lost to Shawn Putnam 8-6, Rodolfo Luat, Nick Varner, Raj Hundal, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Bustamante, Gabe Owen, and Charlie Williams.Round 3 Group 61Group 63Group 65Group 67R.
