Surprises and Expected Finishes Bring the Reno Field to 24by Rick DavisThursday evening’s action at the Reno Open brought the winners’ side down to 16 players with the 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. rounds. SoCal resident and table mechanic Ernesto Dominguez defeated Shane Van Boening 9-6, while Canada’s Tyler Edey defeated Rafael Martinez by the same margin. Dominguez and Edey must now face off on Saturday, as do Santos Sambajon Jr. and Sparky Ferrell.
Otherwise, most of the expected names are still on the winners’ side, such as Jose Parica, Tony Chohan, Gabe Owen, and Cliff Joyner. Some new names are there as well including Rich Orem, a Florida player who has started to gain notice on the Florida Pro Tour. With the day beginning with 72 players and shrinking to 24 at the end of the evening, many found their way to the door as the rounds progressed. WPBA touring pro Melissa Little was eliminated early in the day, along with Richard Broumpton who was knocked out by Texas’s Jui-Lung Chen 9-7. This is what the top 32 look like before the evening rounds begin that will eliminate another 8 players from the one-loss bracket:Winners’ SideJonathan Pinegar v. Gabe OwenErnesto Dominguez v.
