Team USA Geared Up for Billiards TournamentThe American billiard players at the World Open 8-Ball Championship started off the day well. Of the 60 players who returned this morning, 19 players are from the US, and 5 are here from having won qualification events. Dave Matlock, one of the qualifiers, scored a convincing 8-4 victory over England’s Chris Melling in the first round, saying, “I felt really good there. I broke good and made balls on the break. I felt a lot more focused today than I did yesterday. I kinda got into a grove last night, and it carried over to today.”Because of his strong finish at the North American Open last July, Matlock stands an excellent chance of receiving his 2007 IPT card. Matlock commented, “It looking pretty good. I feel real good—that’s what everybody wants.”Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image Gallery
American Corey Deuel currently sports the highest games-won percentage at 70%. “I can’t believe that,” he exclaimed. “I really haven’t been playing all that well. I wasn’t breaking good yesterday. I got through all my matches and nobody got past four … I think I just played good position, really. Hopefully I can play better today. I’m gonna work on my break. Yesterday I didn’t feel all that well.”IPT member Mike Davis won a hill-hill nail-biter over Serbian Sandor Tot in the first round, scoring two break and runs in the bargain. “It went pretty good,” the quiet Davis said afterward. “Neither one of us made balls on the break. We each ran two racks the whole time—I actually choked on a ball when I was ahead seven-five, and I was lucky to get another chance. He ran the next one, finished that one, and at seven-seven he broke dry and I had to run ‘em pretty tough that time and play some tough position shots. “I’m a little more calm today because I started off okay today. Yesterday I had those first-round jitters even though I played pretty good after that. But today I felt good right at the beginning, so hopefully I can stay like that.”Round 3 GROUP 61D. HarrimanK.
