Team USA Named for Junior World ChampionshipsFive to compete for the U.S. in AustraliaColorado Springs, Colorado: The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) recently named its Junior World Championship team, selecting young athletes for the squad from among top finishers at the recent 16th Annual BCA Junior National 9-Ball Championships. Five youngsters advanced from that field of play to secure roster spots with Team USA, which is scheduled to compete at the upcoming World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) Junior World Championships in Adelaide, Australia, November 3-5, 2004.
John Morra, Tyler Strawn and Justin Bergman were tapped for finishing in the top three positions (respectively) in the Boys 18 & Under division (B18-), along with Girls 18 & Under (G18-) winner Mary Rakin, and Boys 14 & Under (B14-) champ Christopher Futrell. All five athletes will travel down under to represent the United States in the WPA Junior Worlds, where a new field for Mary Rakin represents a milestone in girls' billiards. It is the first time that a separate division has been offered for girls at the world event - a move which underscores the strength of the BCA's junior development efforts and growth of the WPA.The qualifying 9-Ball event was held at the Student Union Memorial Center Billiards & Games Room of the University of Arizona in Tucson, July 21-24, 2004, and drew 123 student-athletes to the three divisions of play. Earlier in the season, each athlete had earned a berth at the Junior Nationals through local qualifying events produced by a BCA-member room operator between April and June, or through nomination by a BCA-sanctioned junior league.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news from the sport of billiards and pool.
