The 29th Annual U.S. Open Begins By InsidePOOL StaffThe 2004 U.S. Open began today, September 6, with just one shy of a 200-player field. It’s warm and humid down in Chesapeake, VA, at the conference center, and the players are pouring in from all directions to challenge defending champion Jeremy “Double J” Jones for his title.Past champions who are present include Jimmy Reid, Mike Lebron, Buddy “The Rifleman” Hall, Earl Strickland, Efren “Bata” Reyes, Ralf Souquet, Tommy Kennedy, Corey Deuel, “Rocket” Rodney Morris, and Allen Hopkins. Past and present world champions are also present, including Alex Pagulayan, Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer, and Thorsten Hohmann, all newly arrived from The Hague, where they participated in the World Pool Masters. Representing the new guard is Scott “The Freezer” Frost, Tony Chohan, Danny “Kid Delicious” Basavich, Shawn Putnam, Niels Feijen, Ryan McCreesh, and Tony “The Silent Assassin” Robles, all hoping to add to their resumes with a win at the 29th Annual U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships.
Forty players were given a bye, based on UPA and WPA rankings as well as promoter’s choice. one player who did not receive a bye was last year’s semifinalist, Keith McCready, who plays Ryan McCreesh at 9 p.m. this evening.With $50,000 added to the total purse, the winner will walk away $30,000 heavier.
