The Scorpion Leads the Pack at BCA Open Championships By InsidePOOL StaffJohnny Archer fought a tough match with New York player Nick Schulman in the late evening rounds on the first day of the BCA Open 9-Ball Championships. The event began on Sunday, May 16, and will conclude with the final match on Saturday, May 22.The lanky player from the Big Apple gained a 5-2 lead on Archer early in the match, while his hometown crowd cheered him on. Archer, who is accompanied by wife Melanie and newborn Johnny Lee Junior, wrestled the score to 5 apiece, and the two traded games until the score was knotted at 8. “The Scorpion” gained the lead, and with the alternating-break format took the hill. Schulman, who plays extremely well and with a good deal of flair, broke next, got funny on the 3, and played safe. Archer hit the 3 but left his opponent a makeable shot, and Schulman cleared the table with no problem. However, with Archer breaking the next rack, it was all over, and the match ended with a run-out by Archer and an 11-9 decision.
There were a couple of forfeits in the first day’s matches, including Danny Harriman and Jeremy Seaman. Holland’s Niels Feijen suffered an 11-5 defeat at the hands of Danny Hewitt, who took top honors at the 2003 Trump Marina 10-Ball Challenge. New Jersey room owner Jose Garcia was bested 11-6 by Hisashi Yamamoto in a well-played match by the Japanese player. Brian Groce, who hails from Indiana and won the BCA Master’s division in 2003, sent Dave “The Wave” Hemmah packing 11-6. A tremendous hill-hill match took place between current U.S. Open champion Jeremy “Double J” Jones and George Breedlove, with Jones being sent to the one-loss side. Santos Sambajon, Jr., defeated Eddie Galati 11-7, and Rodolfo Luat won his match against Kasuki Masuda 11-5, but countryman Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
