The Tenth Annual Music City Openby Matthew PingorMadison, TN - Picking up from the heel of the Derby City Classic, the Tenth Annual Music City 9-Ball Open started around twilight January 18. A player field of 79 showed up to JOB Billiards of Madison, TN, for the excitement. Mike Williamson defeated Chuck Ralston early on 11-5. Lane Gatlin was stopped in his tracks by the hands of John Gatton 11-6. Three-cushion shooter Marco Marquez, wheel in hand, ran over Chris Bartlin like a Mac truck 11-3. Following suit, Tony Fargo pulled a hit-and-run on Joe Coleman with a score of 11-1. Tournament director Scott “The Junkyard Dog” Smith prepared to face Russ Edwards. Smith held on as well as he could and made the match appealing, but he lost his grip and fell to Edwards 11-5. Across the room David Broxson was slugging it out with James Miller, taking him down 11-3. Bryan Hunter made a stand against Caleb McGuire but could not rally all the way and succumbed to a score of 11-6.
Close scores in the Music City Open have been scarce so far. Keeping the room glowing, Brandon Ashcraft defeated John Hennesee 11-8. Matching that score, Doug Young eked out of the danger zone, winning 11-8 over Mark Jarvis. In the easiest match of the event so far, Ricky Williams won as George Stanley forfeited. As Williams relaxed, Shane Van Boening was on his way to putting Steve McDaniels to sleep. He did so with a zippy 11-2 score. Brent Jackson held his breath while playing John Watson. Jackson inhaled, composed himself and played with no regard to Watson’s ambition, winning the match 11-5. The fun commenced early on the afternoon of January 19.
