Three Ambassadors of Rotation Hold Sway in Derby City Classic 9-BallFeijen last unmarred record among two Filipino stalwartsNiels Feijen can consider himself fortunate: Two byes in a row to a finals is not unheard of in Derby City Classic competition, as David “The Gunslinger” Matlock was the recipient of such a gift in the 2005 banks division, Truman Hogue remembers the sting of taking third place that year, and the Louisville legend is not the only loud murmur in the crowd outside the Billiard Club Network concerning Feijen’s seemingly unfair advantage over Francisco Bustamante and Rodolfo Luat, who are playing right now. Many are talking, two are playing.Derby City Classic image galleryDiscuss the Derby City Classic
There will be plenty of commentary in the aftermath of an amazing group of 9-ball rounds that knocked out 13 players who had drank the cup of billiards to the bitter end. In the arena, the loud cheers overshadow this temporary debate in a week filled with enlightening discussion, entertainment, and play. While the original Filipino kid Efren “Bata” Reyes has already shaken off two celebrations for his unparalleled success in All-Around competition here, Bustamante or Luat is preparing to try to make their own party. It will take two wins over a determined and almost indifferent Feijen. Bustamante leads 2-1, and some readers may remember what it means when Scott “The Shot” Smith utters the phrase, “Mr. Bustamante has cue ball in hand.”For Bustamante, the road less traveled through byes would probably seem welcome, if it weren’t for the enormous heart of the international superstar. Bustamante notched wins over Rafael Martinez-Chavez, and a vicious reprisal for defeat at the hands of Gabe Owen on the BCn table in his third contest of the day. His most recent victory over Johnny Archer was an amazing bout, although Archer tripped up playing position with a chance to join “Django” on the hill. The 7-5 win propelled Bustamante to this match with Luat, who himself has battled successfully through Larry Nevel, Shannon Murphy, and Thorsten Hohmann. While the attention was focused on Busta and “The Scorpion,” Luat quietly ran through a seemingly ruffled Owen.“Rudi” needs the cheers of the crowd more than speculation about where Feijen can be reached for comment on his dice rolling, card drawing, and blindfolded piñata blasting prowess. For his part, whether the talk of good rolls reached the ears of “The Terminator” in the respectfully quiet room, Feijen just kept on winning convincingly over anyone they put in front of him before the gift of Derby City’s true gamble caused controversy. (And don’t worry, there’s a controversy for every 15 minutes and 25 feet, give or take a dimension.)Gandy Valle was routed 7-2. Larry Nevel bought back to get pounded 7-1. He escaped Archer in a 7-6 gem, ended on one of two shots that Johnny didn’t quite come up with to stay undefeated. Of those two 6-balls, one is probably rolling its way towards a reprieve for Luat on a flat-screen monitor near you. Bustamante holds the edge 5-2 live here from the tournament arena at the Executive West.InsidePOOLmag.com will make at least one more post from the Derby City Classic tonight(ish) that reveals the final act of Filipino fratricide and the chances of Feijen escaping unscathed by the hecklers. Or the whisperers … the murmur grows to a roar, someone audibly squeals from the other side of the bleachers. For high octane 9-ball, the Derby City Classic has tiptoed into the limelight once again.
