Three Divisions of Pocket Billiards Players Vie for Straight Pool Honorsby Rick DavisThe Tri-State Tour drew in 32 competitors for their semi-regular straight pool event, held August 5-6. Amsterdam Billiards and Bar in New York, NY, played host, while James Dorsey, Martin Kristy, and Richard Feltz each won their division through a variety of paths.In the B division, the race to 100 was no problem for Carl Yusef, as he coasted into the finals undefeated. Dorsey, who had just lost the hot seat match 100-80, fought back from the one-loss side to take revenge against Yusef by defeating him 120-72 in the finals.Early action in the C division saw Steve Falconer send Kamran Jehle to the one-loss side, but after winding up there himself Jehle took advantage of a rematch, eliminating Falconer 60-58. On the winners’ side, Kristy remained undefeated, sending Charles Bromley Jr. away from the hot seat match to face Jehle. After winning his last match by two balls, Jehle squeaked through another one, besting Bromley 60-57. He came a long way to be in the finals; however, Kristy would not let the match draw close, and with the lead throughout the match, he defeated Jehle 80-56.
The remaining action in the D division was fast and furious. Dave Fitzpatrick stayed undefeated to reach the finals, but a comeback was unfolding on the one-loss side. Richard Feltz, one of only two players not to receive a first-round bye, came back to win five matches to reach the semifinals after being defeated in the first round. On a mission, Feltz eliminated Thomas Ovic after Fitzpatrick knocked him to the one-loss side and finally, after six wins on the one-loss side, reached the finals.
