Three Players Remain in one-Pocket Division
By InsidePOOL Staff
The one-pocket division of the Sixth Annual Derby City Classic has come down to three players: Marco Marquez, Billy Palmer, and Efren Reyes. Each player has suffered one loss and thus has no buy-backs remaining. The one-pocket semifinals will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2004.In the first one-pocket match-up on Friday, Reyes, who is generally considered to be the best all-around player in the world today, and Palmer. At this point, Reyes had no losses while Palmer had one. Palmer, a player out of San Francisco, CA, is one of the top players in Northern California and plays all games well. At the beginning of the game, he seemed a bit timid and played extremely defensively, making for a long match.
Reyes did not play up to par and appeared to be having a tough time with the cueball, and ultimately Palmer won the two-and-a-half-hour match by the score of 3-2. The second match-up was between the undefeated Marquez and “The Magician.” A swift match that took less than an hour saw Marquez dealt his first loss as well. Reyes won the first game 8-1. A nice long cross bank on the 2 ball in the second game set him up to run 6 more and out for another 8-1 win, putting Reyes on the hill. Not one to break a trend, Reyes kicked in the 2 ball and then ran another 7 and out to win the third game by the now-familiar score of 8-1 and the match 3-0.The 9-ball event is now down to approximately 42 players, with more being eliminated all the time. The one-pocket division is scheduled to conclude this evening, while the 9-ball will last through Saturday, January 23, 2004.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
