Townsend Takes Florida Amidst Surprisesby Rick DavisCoasting into the calm atmosphere of Florida, the J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour strolled into Stix ‘N’ Stones in Palatka, where an excited crowd watched Scotty Townsend win undefeated.A field of 23 players sparred during the July 15-16 weekend, and by the end of the first day only four players remained. After a vote by the players, the decision was made to resume play at 10 a.m. instead of the usual 1 p.m., causing havoc for tour director Tommy Kennedy, who was still on the winners’ side.
Kennedy didn’t make his early match against Townsend in the hot seat, and the forfeit had him face Richie Orem on the one-loss side. Orem played a strong match against multi-time Florida Pro Tour winner Dave Grossman, defeating him 9-5. Facing Kennedy in the next match, Orem won the coin toss and then proceeded to break and run nine racks for the shut-out against Kennedy. Orem could not have been shooting better, but the waiting Townsend overcame him and took the match 11-7.Results:1st Scotty Townsend2nd Richie Orem3rd Tommy Kennedy4th Dave Grossman
