Townsend and Tush Snap off The Hole Thang
Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour / Macon, GA
by InsidePOOL Staff
The Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour made its way to The Hole Thang in Macon, GA, the weekend of March 17-18 for a $1,000-added open event and a $500-added amateur event. The events drew 47 billiard players for the tournament action on the bar tables, with Scotty Townsend taking top honors in the open and Sam Tush winning first place in the amateur division.

The Hole Thang was an excellent host for the events. The room recovered all 25 tables for the events and gave away over 300 pounds of free ribs to everyone in attendance all weekend. All the players and spectators in attendance were thrilled with The Hole Thang’s graciousness and generosity. All weekend long the five action tables stayed busy as players matched up against each other for action that usually lasted until early in the morning the following day.
When tournament director Mike Janis was asked about the new room (The Hole Thang), he replied, "The Hole Thang is by far one of the best players’ rooms I have ever seen. The owners really know how to take care of their equipment and everyone that comes here."
Townsend’s path to the finals began with a 9-3 victory over Brian Sellars and then a 9-2 win against Randy Mears. He won an additional two matches to reach the hot seat against Eric Charlton, whom he defeated 9-4 to advance to the finals. On a collision course with Townsend, Brian White lost his second-round match to Jeff Abernathy but regained his composure in the one-loss side. He scored seven matches in a row to reach the finals, where he finally succumbed to Townsend, who won the match with a stunning 9-1 score.
In the amateur event, Sam Tush blazed through the winners’ side with victories over Chris Steele, David Poole, Larry Harrington, and David Redd to reach the hot seat match. There he met with Bobby Williams and won 6-4, sending Williams to the left side of the chart. There Mike Janis was working his way through after his third-round loss to Williams. He reached the semifinals to wreak revenge on Williams, winning 5-2 to advance. On a roll, Janis took the first set of the final match against Tush to the hill and won, but the second set went to Tush in a narrow 5-3 victory.
