Trevino Takes First AWBT Win

Thirty-three women billiards players came to Metro Sportz Bar to play in the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour’s third stop, presented by J. Pechauer Custom Cues. This March 10-11 event offered a WPBA qualifier for the EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball Open in May, and Michelle Trevino not only won her first AWBT event but scored the free entry as well.
Many of the usual favorites were knocked to the B-side early, allowing many fresh new faces to emerge on the winners’ side. Kristie Ortega made it through her bracket with ease and earned her way into her first AWBT hot seat match. Her opponent, Trevino, also played very well all weekend and proved it yet again, defeating Ortega 7-1 to allow herself a well-deserved break. Kristin Haney defeated Susan Mello in the quarterfinal match to advance and meet Ortega in the semifinals. The match was quite close and both players did a great job, but Ortega came out on top.
The first set of the double-elimination final match between Ortega and Trevino was fairly close. Ortega held the lead for the first half, with Trevino knotting the score at 4-all in the race to 7. When Trevino left a 9 ball for her opponent, Ortega took advantage to leap ahead, winning 7-4. The tides turned in the second set, though, with Trevino keeping the lead throughout. Though Ortega played some excellent safeties, Trevino still reached the hill 6-3. In the final rack, the balls were spread beautifully, and Trevino ran the table to the 7-9 combo, which she pocketed to win the match.
